History

Fun Fact:

It hasn’t been long since we discovered the Goldendoodle or Groodle. They were first bred in 1969 as guide dogs but only recently became popular, stealing our hearts in the 1990s.

The crossbreeding of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever resulted in a “designer breed” that was actually inspired by the successful breeding of Labradoodles and Cockapoos. They were bred with the intention to combine the hypoallergenic coats of Poodles and the charming personality of a Golden Retriever.

Did you know? The three dogs who won the first American Kennel Club’s Obedience Champion title were Golden Retrievers! Poodles are also known for their intelligence and ability, they were originally known for being water dogs. Goldendoodles are the best combination of these two outstanding dogs with awe-inspiring characteristics!

Is It a Good Idea To Bring Up A Goldendoodle Puppy In Singapore?

YES YES YES!

Without a doubt! If the above is what you’re looking for in a pup, Goldendoodles will make one of the most loyal companions.

They get along great with kids and other pets because of their calm demeanor. They are good for first-time owners as well!

There’s a misconception that Goldendoodles are not for apartment living but that’s not true as long as you meet their daily exercise needs.

In addition, they are intelligent, easy to train and in no time adjust to a new environment.

It might take a little patience but it's worth it, trust us!

Training

You may have the most fun training your Goldendoodle because...

Goldendoodles are athletic, obedient and highly intelligent. These traits make them easy and a joy to train!

Goldendoodles respond to training the best with positive reinforcement and rewards in the form of treats! You’ll be surprised with how many tricks they’ll be happy to show you in return for some yummy goodies.

Goldendoodles need regular exercise. It is good to give them ample swimming, walking, hiking and running opportunities to channel their energy in a healthy way. Their true personalities shine through agility because that’s something that comes natural to them.

Apart from being energetic pups, they are more than happy to sit by your side and laze around. They make the best cuddle buddies! The best to begin training your Goldendoodle as young as possible. This is to establish a foundation that will last.

Nutrition

Goldendoodles thrive on a high-quality diet with minimal processed foods.

Natural diets with as little processed foods are good for your pup in the long run. Dry foods like kibbles is rich in protein and high in fats should make the bulk of your Goldendoodles diet.

We recommend a grain-free diet with whole vegetables as well as meat-based protein like chicken breasts to accompany their traditional kibble diet.

Make sure that your dog’s diet doesn’t contain corn, wheat, soy or dairy in larger amounts. It increases the risk of your dog developing food allergies.

How Should I Groom My Goldendoodle?

Grooming your Goldendoodle is not a difficult task, but it does require regular upkeep. Their coats can be curly, wavy, or straight, depending on which parent’s genes are more dominant. Curlier coats need more maintenance to prevent matting, while wavy and straight coats are generally easier to manage.

Regular trims help keep their fur neat and comfortable, especially in Singapore’s warm climate. Haircuts every 6-8 weeks ensure their coat stays manageable and clean. Professional grooming services can provide breed-specific cuts, but a simple trim can also be done at home with the right tools.

If you choose to groom your Goldendoodle yourself, investing in proper grooming tools like clippers, scissors, and a detangling brush is essential. Patience and practice are key to achieving a neat and even trim. Whether you opt for DIY grooming or professional services, maintaining a consistent grooming routine keeps your Goldendoodle looking and feeling their best!

Showering & Brushing

Goldendoodles should shower once a week or once every two weeks. Goldendoodles’ coats can vary from incredibly curly to wavy to straight depending on which genes are more dominant.

Curlier, longer fur can require more maintenance but too much bathing can be as harmful as not showering enough.

Dogs need certain levels of natural oils in their fur and skin, overbathing can cause dry and itchy skin especially with Singapore’s humid climate.

In addition, your dog’s skin will overcompensate and over produce natural oils, resulting in a greasy dog. Make sure you really get in there to their skin and not just their fur for a thorough bathe

Exposing your pup to the world of showering should be a positive one, just like any first-time experience take the time to build a positive association for your pup and taking a bath

Remember to brush their fur before the bath to prevent matts as well as after. Brush and brush again! It is important to brush their wet fur to further prevent matts and tangles.

Nail Clipping

Unfortunately nail trimming isn’t the most enjoyable so choose a spot where your dog is relaxed and you can hold him/her in your lap as you trim their nails.

Cut at an angle and take your time, making sure you don’t clip beyond the quick which is the blood supply and nerve that nourishes the nail. Consider taking breaks in between, giving them a treat and comfort before continuing if it’s their first time.

Trim your pup’s nails once a week or take a visit to the groomers.

Brushing Your Goldendoodle's Teeth

Good news!

Goldendoodles are less prone to plaque, cavities, and gingivitis compared to other breeds. However, regular dental care is still essential to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Brushing your Goldendoodle’s teeth daily is the best way to maintain oral hygiene. Use a canine toothbrush with soft bristles and dog-friendly toothpaste to prevent tartar buildup and bad breath. Dental chews and water additives can also help support their oral health.

It’s important to check your dog’s teeth regularly for signs of discoloration, bad breath, or missing teeth.

If you notice anything unusual, consult your vet for advice. Additionally, dry kibble is great for dogs as it helps scrape off plaque while they chew, contributing to cleaner teeth and better overall dental health!

Common Illnesses in Goldendoodles

At Pet Me Please,

we partner only with ethical breeders who screen their dogs thoroughly for all breed-related health conditions.

Unethical breeding practices can often result in unhealthy puppies, as unscrupulous breeders may knowingly breed dogs with health issues to maximize profits by producing more puppies for sale. In contrast, Pet Me Please works exclusively with ethical breeders who test their dogs for over 200 known health conditions before breeding, ensuring you receive a healthy puppy free from genetic diseases.

Hearing health issues that your dog is prone to can be terrifying for any dog owner but don’t worry! These are health issues that Goldendoodles are predisposed to, it doesn’t mean all Goldendoodles will get them, they are just more at risk. Keeping informed can go a long way in ensuring the health of your pup, we hope this helps!

Hip Dysplasia

There are different factors that lead to hip dysplasia in dogs and it usually begins with genes they inherit from their parents (this is why thorough health checks are important!). This condition means that joints aren’t developed properly from birth and can eventually lead to loss in hip function. Most of the time, hip dysplasia is hereditary but excessive weight gain, improper nutrition and exercise can also lead to hip dysplasia later on.

There are two main things you can do to avoid this painful condition. Firstly, make sure that health checks are done by reputable breeders on parents (like what we do here at PMP!).

Secondly,  make sure you never overfeed your dog, stick to the recommended proportions and give them regular exercise to keep healthy!

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

PRA is a genetic disease where a puppy’s eyes are programmed from birth to go blind. Unfortunately, with most eye diseases there’s nothing much dog owners can do and Goldendoodles are more prone to inheriting it. Sourcing your Goldendoodles from an ethical breeder is the first step in making sure that your pup doesn’t have PRA because of the stringent health checks they do.

Types of Goldendoodles

Understanding F1, F2, and Multi-Gen Types!

Goldendoodles are cute for sure and there are different types of Goldendoodles. This will help you a ton in deciding which one is the best fit for you. You might have heard about F1, F2, and multigene Goldendoodles, but you won’t probably know the difference. So, here it is:

F1 Generation

An F1 Goldendoodle is a first-generation mix between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle.
This 50-50 blend combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the friendly, loyal nature of the Golden Retriever.

F1B Generation

An F1B Goldendoodle is a mix of an F1 Goldendoodle (50% Golden Retriever, 50% Poodle) and a purebred Poodle.
This results in a pup that is 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever, often with curlier, more hypoallergenic coats.

F2 Generation

An F2 Goldendoodle is a second-generation mix, meaning both parents are F1 Goldendoodles.
This results in a more varied coat type, ranging from curly to wavy, while keeping the breed’s friendly and intelligent nature.

F2B Generation

An F2B Goldendoodle is a mix of an F1 and F1B Goldendoodle, resulting in a higher chance of curlier, low-shedding coats,
making them more suitable for allergy-sensitive owners.

F3 Generation

An F3 Goldendoodle, also known as a Multi-Gen Goldendoodle, is bred from two second-generation Goldendoodles. Their coats are typically more consistent, often curly or wavy, with a higher likelihood of being low-shedding.

With that being said

Sourcing a Goldendoodle from a reliable ethical breeder/pet shop in Singapore is the first step to giving you and your pup the assurance for a healthy and happy life.

Having pets is a huge responsibility and we do our best to make sure our pups are going to the right family to avoid more dogs in adoption centres or even being abandoned. It’s not all scary, here at PMP we do our best to help owners by arming them with knowledge so they can care for their new pup confidently.
